I wrote these thousands of words during my final year at uni. To be honest I'm quite proud of it as it was the first essay I'd ever written on something I actually cared about. It's basically a semiotic analysis of the use of art as a visual media tool through skateboarding and it starts off like this:
"Skateboarding is an activity that has been typically deemed an aspect of society which, is deviant. But why exactly do we perceive this subcultural phenomenon as one that connotes implications of rebellion, deviation and a public nuisance? Is it possible that we as a hegemonic society have come to this conclusion because of the inherent ideology of individualism that is a strong part of the skateboarder code that causes us to label them deviant as a direct result of their rejection of norms and values of the consensus within the broader generalized society?"
